about
bc place

For more than three decades, BC Place has been a centerpiece for the City of Vancouver. Originally erected as the world’s largest air-supported stadium in 1983, the stadium was reinvented and modernized in 2011 as a year-round open-air facility with a cable-supported retractable roof – the biggest of its kind in the world.

BC Place is the current home of the BC Lions and their history at the stadium dates back to its conception over three decades ago.  After 21 years at Empire Stadium, the BC Lions played their first regular season game at BC Place on July 14, 1983 in front of a then CFL record 41,810 fans and won their third Grey Cup that same year at home. Since then, the stadium has hosted the CFL’s championship game eight times, including the 99th Grey Cup in 2011, which the Lions won under the newly completed roof.

Retractable roof

The stadium features 100m x 85m of blue-sky when open – the same size as the field area below. Each of the roof’s support masts is 47m tall. Altogether, the structure is like 18 suspension bridges, each around 200m long. To open the roof, the flexible Tenara fabric retracts into the center of the opening where it’s hidden inside of a pod above the video board. The transformation takes just 20 minutes. The roof will be closed for the 111th Grey Cup game.

Field

The field is Polytan Ligaturf 240 RS+ all-weather turf, designed to meet the highest standards.

Light display

Those who gaze at the stadium will notice façade panels just above the concrete ring beam that creates an ETFE light display. This display shows a variety of colours and is customized for CFL games.

Seating capacity

The stadium will be able to accommodate over 52,000 fans for the 111th Grey Cup.

Merchandise

There are four retail locations situated on the Level 2 concourse in sections 205,222, 233 and 249. Each of them will open as gates open on gameday. Assigned sections subject to change.

Accessibility

The stadium is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, directly next to Rogers Arena, home of the Vancouver Canucks. Though parking is available in the area, it is often limited during special events. Another way to get to the stadium is on public transportation via Skytrain, bus, SeaBus or West Coast Express train.
